Cory Cole
Better If I Did
Found another place to hang my hat and dream
Another place where things are better than they seem
At the door my troubles knock
I ain't lifting up that rock
Pulling threads where I unravel at the seams
In the hallway there's a fight between two friends
I love you hate you never seems to end
Makes me think about my life
Being wrong being right
I guess it makes no difference in the end
I wonder if it's always gonna be this way
You said I'd lose it all and I think I did
Everybody talks about a brand new day
I could say I'll change
But who am I trying to kid
I don't think I'd be much better if I did

I heard you found yourself another man
I know he loves you better than I can
There's a hunger in my soul
What it's for I still don't know
I keep riding this same train right 'til the end
Confession and redemption terrify a troubled man
Forgiveness hinges on your point of view
What I lack in affection I can cover with a smile
Tell me what else is a poor boy supposed to do
I don't think I get a free pass back to you

Short Song Description:
I introduce this during performances by saying, "This song is about self-inventory and trying to do things better. But when you think about, it's really kinda too much trouble, so..."
Long Song Description:
I think this song has some of my best lyrics, and certainly one of my favorite lines: "There's a hunger in my soul, what it's for I still don't know; I keep riding this same train right to the end." I think the challenge with writing a good song is to tell a story with as few words as possible in a way that your audience connects with. Hope I did that here.
Story Behind the Song:
Walked out to my favorite writing spot- an aisle set between two pine rows where inspiration always seems to find me. Started thinking about the complexity of relationships- conflict and contradiction often existing simultaneously with a need for connection.
